The remains of a Delaware woman reported missing on November 1, 2020 were found in a Maryland backyard a week ago, and a 41-year-old suspect is currently in custody. That’s according to the Delaware State Police, who noted that Leonard’s “Buddy” Church was taken into custody on unrelated charges days before he was formally charged with murder.
Authorities say 41 years old Jennifer Leyanna of Fenton, Delaware, was last seen or heard on October 9, 2020 but was not reported missing until November 1, 2020. Delaware State Police posted about Leyanna went missing on November 12, 2020, and said that Leyanna was “last seen on October 11, 2020, around Slaughter Station, Hartly.”
“She is known for her frequent locations in Delaware and Maryland,” the post said. “Jennifer is described as a Caucasian woman, 5’1 ″, 130 lbs., with brown hair and blue eyes. She has no means of transport, and it is unknown what she was last seen wearing.” State police say there is “real concern” for Leyanna’s “safety and well-being” after all her friends and family could not find her.
In the update on February 22, 2022, Delaware State Police announced that they have confirmed Leyanna’s remains were found February 16 in the backyard of a mansion on the “25000 block of Schuyler Street, Henderson, MD,” seems to be quite a remote area. Maryland court records show that Church had a residence on that property.
Delaware State Police did not explain what they meant by “investigative measures” that aided in establishing Church as a suspect during a “prolonged” criminal investigation, but they did say that their deputies Maryland arrested Church on February 16th – same thing. the date Leyanna’s remains were found – with “unrelated criminal charges.” Maryland court filings reveal more about what those unrelated charges were. The only two “open” cases in the Caroline County Courthouse under Church’s name were for a defection order (on February 17) and a criminal case that occurred on February 16.
The February 16 report found that Church faced multiple drug and gun-related charges, four of which were listed as felonies. Three of the felony charges indicate that Church unlawfully possessed an assault rifle or handgun as a convicted felony.
According to a press release from the Delaware State Police, Church was extradited on February 21 from the Caroline County Detention Center to Delaware State Police Division 3.
Church was charged with first-degree murder and held a $2 million deposit at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
