The Mage Tower solo challenges were one of the most memorable parts of the World of Warcraft Legion expansion. Players have requested more content like this since it was removed, and Blizzard actually brought it back in patch 9.1.5 with an annoying catch – it was only available during Legion Timewalking. This meant players could only try for a week every four months. Luckily, the screams of the fans were heard. Blizzard is bringing back the Mage Tower Challenges permanently starting March 29, 2022.
In an update published on the official website, Blizzard stated that they originally only had the challenges available during Legion Timewalking because they wanted to add other fun features to the event beyond what would normally be expected with Timewalking is. However, an additional new feature, Timeworn Keystones, has been added to the event that brought Legion dungeons back to Mythic Plus. This was more than satisfactory for keeping fans busy throughout the week, and only giving a personal challenge like Mage Tower to a brief window every few months was not in the spirit of the event.
This change is another step for the developers to listen to player feedback and act accordingly. It’s been refreshing to see how much developer communication has improved over the last few months. Separating the Mage Tower from Legion Timewalking allows players to take on the challenges and earn the rewards at their own pace without fear of missing out. It will also indirectly increase the popularity of Timeworn Keystones while Legion Timewalking is active, as players will not be distracted from trying to complete as many attempts as possible on the challenges during the event.
