League announces suspension of LeBron James and Isaiah Stewart

The League announced what the penalties will be after the Lakers’ 121-116 win over the Pistons, marred by a mid-game change LeBron James and Isaiah Stewart.

In a statement from the League explaining the penalties, the NBA said it had given James a one-game suspension for no pay for “carelessly hitting Stewart in the face and initiating a melee in court.” James was charged with Flagrant 2 and ejected after slapping Stewart in the face while they vie for rehab. This is James’ second launch in his 19-year career, first coming in 2017.

The Lakers (9-9) will be forced to play Wednesday’s four-time MVP against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

The league said the Pistons (4-12) will be without Stewart for two games for “escalating a melee on the field by repeatedly and aggressively pursuing Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James.”

Stewart was charged with two techniques for “many unsportsmanlike conduct in the exchange.” Detroit enters a series of head-to-head games against the Heat and Bucks that begin Tuesday.

“It was a tough play for Isaiah,” Pistons head coach Dwane Casey tells ESPN. “His eyes were cracked open, and he was sad for a reason. So I don’t think James is a dirty player, but again, it got them going. ”

Based on Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, who polled various people in “NBA-related positions” on what “appropriate feedback” would be from the League, Pincus reported that many of the answers he received were “all over the map.”

Pincus wrote that “Some speculated James would get to play a game or two, but some opposed that view when reminded that the next Lakers would play the Knicks in New York on Tuesday.”
