Lawyers argue that Trump’s claim that he “fixed” the Florida election for Ron DeSantis proves Andrew Gillum was selectively pursued by the FBI

Attorneys for former Florida gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum argue that Donald Trump’s claim that he “fixed” the 2018 state election for Ron DeSantis is evidence that an FBI indictment against the Democrat was politically and racially motivated .

Gillum has been charged by federal authorities with 19 counts of wire fraud and one conspiracy to wire fraud. His attorneys, David Markus and Katherine Miller, argue that all charges against the former Tallahassee mayor over Trump’s tirade against DeSantis on Thursday should be dropped.

“I was all in for Ron and he beat Gillum, but after the race, when Broward County’s corrupt electoral process was stealing votes and Ron was losing ten thousand votes a day, along with now-Senator Rick Scott, I sent in the FBI and the US attorneys in, and the election-stealing ended immediately, just before they ran out of the votes needed to win. I prevented his election from being stolen,” Trump said in a statement posted to his social media website, Truth Social.

DeSantis defeated Gillum in the 2018 gubernatorial campaign by a 0.4 percent margin.

DeSantis, a strong Trump ally during his first term, was re-elected Nov. 8. His win bolstered his role in the Republican Party, as some see him as a promising contender for Trump in his third run for the White House.

Trump released the statement marking DeSantis’ midterm election victory, calling him an “average” Republican before coming to his aid.

Trump announced his plans for his 2024 presidential election on Tuesday, November 15. DeSantis has dismissed questions about his potential presidential campaign.

Trump said he saved the GOP governor, whom he has dubbed “Ron DeSanctimonious,” when his campaign “completely fell apart.”

Gillum’s attorneys cited the former Republican president’s statement as evidence the Black Democrat was the target of an FBI investigation in a motion filed Friday, the Tallahassee Democrat reports.

“Former President Trump’s posts raise serious questions about exactly how Trump ‘fixed’ the DeSantis campaign and what Trump ordered the FBI and the US Attorney’s Office to do, and whether it had any connection to the FBI’s and subsequent investigations There is prosecution of Gillum,” says Markus and Miller wrote.

Gillum and his counsel Sharon Lettman-Hicks plead not guilty to the federal indictment on June 22. Gillum has insisted there was a “target on his back”.

Federal authorities allege that Gillum and Lettman-Hicks misappropriated more than $200,000 in campaign funds.

The indictment also alleges that Gillum accepted hotel rooms, dinner and tickets to the Broadway musical Hamilton from an undercover FBI agent. He is also accused of providing false information for lying about the nature of the relationship with the agent, who posed as a developer.

His lawyers now argue that Trump’s testimony creates the impression of “selective prosecution (at least for political reasons) because Donald Trump confirms that he acted through the FBI and the US Attorney’s Office.”

Broward County Election Commissioner Ivan Castro’s spokesman has dismissed Trump’s comments.

“The supervisor of the Broward County Elections Office has no record of federal agency attendance during the 2018 election,” Castro said. “Also, for clarity, there is no evidence of corruption during the 2018 election cycle in Broward County.” Lawyers argue that Trump’s claim that he “fixed” the Florida election for Ron DeSantis proves Andrew Gillum was selectively pursued by the FBI
