War in Ukraine: What you need to know
The newest: Russian forces are entrenched in the Lysychansk region and the city is “burning,” the regional governor said Sunday morning. Serhiy Haidai, governor of the Luhansk region, said Russian fighters attacked Lysyhansk – a key element in Russia’s effort to seize the Donbass region – using even more brutal tactics than in Severodonetsk, the neighboring city that was captured last month.
The fight: A slowly regenerating Russian army is gaining ground in eastern Ukraine against brave but under-equipped Ukrainian forces. The United States and its allies are scrambling to supply the massive amounts of arms the Ukrainians desperately need to keep the Russians at bay.
The weapons: Ukraine uses weapons such as Javelin anti-tank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones provided by the United States and other allies. Russia has used a variety of weapons against Ukraine, some of which have drawn the attention and concern of analysts.
