The Cubs have been linked with a potential Kris Bryant reunion since before the shutdown. Based on the latest rumour, Chicago could make a move.
When Cubs traded Kris Bryant before the last trade deadline, a return seems unlikely. However, by moving Bryant to an ideal location closer to his family, the Cubs and Jed Hoyer’s main office made a positive impression on the 29-year-old despite failed contract negotiations in for years.
The following is from a passage I wrote a few weeks ago:
“KB expressed admiration for the way Hoyer handled the trade negotiations, as he brought each of the Cubs core members to a new home that benefits each of them. Javy Baez is sent to Queens to play with his good friend, Francisco Lindor. Anthony Rizzo has family in New York, so the Yankees are a good landing spot. Craig Kimbrel’s son has a heart condition, so a deal with the White Sox allows for a closer stay in Chicago.”
MLB Rumors: Kris Bryant unlikely to return to Giants
It is clear that Bryant will not return to San Francisco. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel reported that the Giants are not willing to spend $100 million on Bryant, and that is his reported asking price.
Its don’t know if Cubs would be willing to spend that much on Bryant at the moment. But, at the very least, it is necessary to remove a potential suitor off the board and give Hoyer and Co the opportunity to do so.
FanSided’s Robert Murray reported last week that a Bryant reunion is likely to follow the course on The Baseball Insiders podcast.
“That’s what I’m working on behind the scenes. I was told by someone who knew Chicago: ‘I wouldn’t rule that out.’ And it’s been on my mind ever since. I am following that…. I think Kris Bryant’s return to Chicago is a realistic scenario. And the number you threw out – $27.28 million – makes complete sense….,” Murray reported.
Obviously there’s more coming from the North Side.
