LaShawn McNeil Killed Officer Jason Rivera, Wounded Officer Wilbert Mora: Police

A man fatally shot a New York City police officer and seriously injured another while they were answering calls Friday, according to police. Officer Jason Rivera only 22. Commissioner Keechant L. According to police, they received a call regarding a family dispute. Police said a woman got into an argument with her son. They said she did not mention injuries or weapons. While there, officers met her and another son. After a brief conversation, police learned that the suspect’s son was in the bedroom. Police described it as an open-plan one-bedroom apartment. Upon entering, there is a living room, kitchen, and a narrow, 30-foot hallway with a closet, bathroom, and bedroom at the end.

An officer stayed with the family while Rivera and Mora walked down the hallway. As they approached, the bedroom door swung open and the suspect’s son fired multiple shots, they said. Shooter – identified as Lashawn McNeil, 47 – kills Rivera and injures Mora. He tried to get out of the apartment, but the third officer shot him twice, hitting his head and right arm, police said.

McNeil used a Glock 45, which had a high-capacity magazine that held up to 40 additional rounds, they said.

It was stolen from Baltimore in 2017, police said, without specifying who took it in the first place. They are working with the joint firearms task force and the ATF to track the gun over the years, they said. The investigation is ongoing. McNeil was on probation for a drug-related offense in 2003, police said. According to police, he had four arrests outside of New York City, related to drug offenses and one count of assaulting a police officer in the late 1990s and early 2000s in South Carolina and Pennsylvania.
