Lakers will interview Kenny Atkinson for the head coaching job

The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly been given permission to interview the Golden State Warriors’ assistant Kenny Atkinson for their spot as head coach.

The Los Angeles Lakers took over as head coach from Frank Vogel after three seasons. Now they’re conducting a search for a new bank chief, with Phil Jackson reportedly providing input. We are now aware of an interview that Los Angeles is preparing for.

According to ESPN senior NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Lakers have been given permission to interview Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson for their position as head coach.

As Wojnarowski notes, this isn’t the first interview Atkinson has received this offseason. He also spoke to the Charlotte Hornets, who fired James Borrego after their elimination from the play-in tournament.

Atkinson joined the Warriors coaching staff as an assistant during the 2021-22 season. Prior to that, he was a member of Tyronn Lue’s team with the Los Angeles Clippers for the 2020-21 season.

But Atkinson is perhaps best known for his tenure as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. He was signed by the team in 2016. The Nets made the 2019 playoffs as the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference, the first time they have secured a berth since 2014. Brooklyn was eliminated by the Philadelphia 76ers in five games.

Towards the end of the 2019-20 season, Atkinson stepped down as the Nets’ head coach.

Overall, Atkinson has a 118-190 regular season record and a 1-4 playoff record.

The Warriors coaching staff has attracted a lot of interest this offseason, and assistant head coach Mike Brown has accepted a deal to become the head coach of the Sacramento Kings.

It remains to be seen who the Lakers are hiring as they try to find solutions this offseason after missing the playoffs and finishing 11th in the Western Conference. Lakers will interview Kenny Atkinson for the head coaching job
