The Los Angeles Lakers are looking to make a splash this offseason. While Kyrie Irving is available, he’s not the only Guardian they’re keeping an eye on.
irving has become difficult to achieve, especially for a team as limited in assets and scope as the Lakers. The Nets have no use for Russell Westbrook, and Rob Pelinka is reluctant to give up too many first-round picks later.
Assuming Irving is unavailable, what should LA do? It certainly won’t be enough to retrace it with LeBron, Anthony Davis and Westbrook. Both James and Davis are injury prone at this point in their careers. Westbrook, meanwhile, has little to no value in a competitor.
On The Lowe PostDave McMenamin identified two potential backup plans for the Lake Show.
“They have an interest in Eric Gordon and Buddy Hield, maybe in addition to Kyrie, and the piece that would need to be moved to make that happen would be Talen Horton-Tucker. But it could also be plan B if they can’t bring this Kyrie situation to fruition…”
What if the Lakers don’t land Kyrie Irving?
Unless LA trades for Irving, it would just be the latest in a long line of players they have failed to deliver. While LeBron got them a ring, he was wasting the end of his career in the City of Angels, at least for the past two seasons.
The Lakers have tried to trade for Hield before but to no avail as the Kings didn’t back down. Gordon is a new name thrown into the mix and could help LA whether they trade for Irving or not.
The goal of acquiring these guards has two purposes – Los Angeles can trade them in addition to Irving or instead of Irving if they can’t meet the Nets’ requirements.
