Kurt Warner claps back at Ryan Tannehill, who is not mentoring Malik Willis

Kurt Warner has a very different perspective on mentoring than Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who said it’s not his job to mentor Malik Willis.

Ryan Tannehill might not have expected to start a storm on Tuesday, but he did thanks to his comments on new Titans quarterback Malik Willis.

Tennessee selected Willis in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, late enough that he isn’t seen as an immediate threat to Tannehill’s starting job, but early enough to indicate that a contest between the two will be in play at some point.

The drama began when Tannehill told reporters, “It’s not that [his] Job” as a mentor for the rookie quarterback.

Immediately, people took notice of this statement, including Hall of Famer quarterback Kurt Warner.

Kurt Warner claps back at Ryan Tannehill for not wanting to mentor Malik Willis

“I’ll never understand the ‘I’m not here to mentor the next mentor’ mentality… so for any young QBs who need a mentor, DM me & I’ll be the guy, I’m happy to help out any way I can !” Warner tweeted.

He then spent a while interacting with people who had replied to his tweet.

“I’ve spent time coaching players and coaches, I’ve spent time inviting people in and talking about what has helped me to be successful because maybe it would help them in the same way… I have time with that.” spent helping my team in whatever way I thought it might be helpful…but it’s just me!” Warner said.

He appealed to those who said Tannehill shouldn’t have to train his successor.

“It’s selfish to just look at it as if someone is taking over your job… look at it as if that person is helping us to be better!! I want my team to be the best and if we’re best with another then I have to accept it and still help us be great – that’s what competition is about!” he said.

He also made it clear that he’s not specifically trying to tail Tannehill.

“No, Ryan is an AMAZING guy… I just wish more men would embrace mentoring and just ‘WANT’ to help others be awesome, whether it’s their ‘job’ or not!” he said.

He even faced someone who made a shopping joke.

“Yep – even there I would help every grocer/packer do their best!!” he said.

Some may side with Tannehill. Others will nod along with Warner. It would be very interesting to hear which side Titans management sits on.
