Kurt Angle Reveals He Was Expected To Win WWE’s Uncontested Title at Vengeance 2001
On a recent podcast at AdFreeShows.com, Kurt Angle said he would initially win the Undisputed Title at Vengeance 2001:
“A week before PPV, I was still the undisputed Champion,” Angle said.
Angle was one of the leading stars driven in the invasion plot at the time and it was clear that he was fit to run with the World Title.
“Vince McMahon chose me as the undisputed Champion,” Angle said. “He wanted me to win two titles. Vince came to me a week before PPV and said, ‘Listen, is it okay if I give it to Jericho because I want to start pushing Jericho and I think this will be great for him.’ I said, ‘You should do it. I think Jericho needs it and this is a great opportunity for him. ‘ So I was supposed to win The Undisputed Championship but Vince McMahon changed it at the last second and gave it to Jericho. ”
Jericho went on to beat The Rock to win the World Championship (WCW) and in the final showdown of the show, he beat Stone Cold Steve Austin to win the WWF Championship in a unified match to become the Undisputed Champion.
The decision to put both titles on Jericho motivated Jericho, and he would continue to use the line “I beat Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock in the same night” for many years in his promotions.
