“You can talk to every expert there is for a lot of segments,” Kochie tells 7Life of 20 years as a record-breaking co-host of Sunrise.
One particular tip that sticks in his mind came from Australian supermodel Jennifer Hawkins – and it was all about complimenting women.
“We talked about men and how they compliment women and how they look,” he says.
“She said the problem with the guys was very simple. You say to your partner, “I like this dress.”
“Well, the dress is like this apparently‘ he says jokingly.
“You think you’re being polite, but your partner thinks, ‘Ah, he’s such a jerk,’ because that’s all you see.”
Rather than pointing out the obvious, Hawkins encouraged the moderator to look for more specific things to comment on positively.
“If you say, ‘I love the way your earrings match your purse,’ the love of your life will say, ‘Oh, they really notice,'” says Kochie.
“Or how your nail polish matches your handbag.
“Noticing the little things is the best thing for your relationship. And I tried that.”
Kochie put the advice to the test, initially showering his wife Libby with a specific compliment.
“The first time I did it, Libby just gave me a weird look and said, ‘Who were you talking to?'”
His advice was later extended to his wider family and it is something that sticks in his mind.
The tip was officially inculcated in him after he interviewed “the nicest guy in the world you’ve ever met,” Hollywood actor Matt Damon.
“A few months later (tip from Jennifer Hawkins), I was interviewing Matt Damon, who was out here promoting the Bourne Identity movies that I love.
“We sat down for the interview and he said, ‘I love your boots,’ and I was like, ‘Let’s go!'”
Kochie teases that it was “love at first sight” after that compliment from Damon.
As for a trick, the host says he loves advice from chef Michael Weldon, who appeared on Sunrise, to make a mango salad.
Michael showed the “trick” of removing the mango flesh with a jar.
“We’re big mango eaters around here and I married a girl from Lismore – mango country – we eat tray after tray of mangoes,” the outgoing host elaborates.
“I hate cutting them up.
“That advice changed my life.”
