Sports media personality Skip Bayless was adamant again when he decided to diss Stephen Curry for firing more shots in the 4th quarter and not including his teammate Klay enough. The 70-year-old thinks Klay Thompson is more reliable than Steph in the NBA Finals.

The Golden State Warriors couldn’t hold back their 12-point lead in the 4th quarter and uncharacteristically lose the opening game of the 2022 NBA Finals. Credit goes to the Boston Celtics defense, which put pressure on the Warriors shooters and made them a tougher one shot forced. But it was also part of the Warriors’ offensive plays, which weren’t smooth enough to help their marquee players in open spaces. Skip Bayless, who relied on Klay Thompson, was amazed the sniper had very few tries in the last 12 minutes of the game while others constantly struggled to score. He went even further, targeting Golden State megastar and primary ball handler Stephen Curry, claiming that Klay was more trustworthy than Steph in the Finals.

The Boston Celtics gave the Golden State Warriors a taste of their own medicine, firing 9 long-range shots at 75% efficiency in the 4th quarter alone while Splash Brothers only managed 1. Ironically, they combined for 27 points from three in the previous three quarters.

Should Klay Thompson have been more involved?

Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson changed the face of the game with their elite and long-range shooting. The Splash Brothers, known for their pinpoint shots, got off to a hot start in the first quarter of the finals. Western Conference Finals MVP Stephen scored 21 points in the 1st quarter, nearly topping the Celtics’ starting number. Klay also had 5 points while both had 75% efficiency on the field.

The fans were happy with the ad and felt comfortable with the outcome of the game. The Warriors continued their ascent going into the 4th quarter with a healthy 12-point lead. Steve Kerr, confident in his team, fielded his second squad for the 4th quarter, with Klay and Draymond the only starters on the pitch.

But after just 3 minutes into the quarter, the Warriors were forced to bring in their main players as the Celtics were on a 9-0 run and cut the deficit to just 3 points. But things didn’t change even after that as the Celtics started taking shots from every available player on the pitch and even leveled the game with 5 minutes left.

The Warriors added 11 points in the first 7 minutes of the fourth quarter, with Klay having just 2 shot attempts and Steph being 2 of 4 (4 minutes into the game). Unfortunately for the Warriors, this misery continued for the rest of the game and they found themselves on the wrong end of the scores.

Klay, who played the entire 4th quarter for the Warriors, was the top scorer in the last 12 minutes with just 5 points. He only had 3 tries during that time, of which he scored 2. Curry, despite going closer to the edge, converted 33% of shots and had 6 tries in the last 8 minutes played.

Skip had a problem with that 4th quarter stat. He said, “Klay Thompson is more trustworthy than Steph Curry in the NBA Finals. What let me down in the 4th is Klay barely touched the basketball, needed more games for him. – Highlighting the number of tries Curry and Klay had for time spent on the floor.

Overall, the Celtics defense was determined to match the Warriors’ offense, which put Curry and co. in a difficult position for the entire 4th quarter. The Warriors were averaging 24 tries per quarter going into the 4th quarter and were only able to manage 17 in the crucial 12 minutes. The Celtics showed consistency in their playmaking, attempting an average of 21 shots per quarter – throughout the game.

Whether Klay’s greater involvement in the 4th quarter would have helped the Warriors turn the game in their favor may be debatable, but that micromanagement is needed for Golden State Warriors to make a comeback in the series.
