Kevin Colbert poured cold water on the rumors of Tyrann Mathieu

Pittsburgh Steelers fans hoping the team would safely sign free agent Tyrann Mathieu had just had their dreams dashed by general manager Kevin Colbert.

The 2022 NFL is a few weeks away, and safe Tyrann Mathieu is still a free agent. Kansas City leaders chose to move on from Mathieu, signing Justin Reid as his replacement. With Mathieu on the open market, fan bases are calling on their team to go after him.

For Pittsburgh Steelers fans hoping that Mathieu would end up with the team, general manager Kevin Colbert ended their hopes, saying he was looking to target veteran young players. You can read Colbert’s comments below, courtesy of ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.

Steelers: Kevin Colbert poured cold water on the team that signed Tyrann Mathieu

Based on his comments, Mathieu is not on the team’s radar, although they do need to be safe. Mathieu is nearing the end of his fourth NFL contract, with the latest being a three-year, $42 million deal with the Chiefs.

Mathieu is about to enter his 30s in the NFL, and he is playing at a high level. Last season, safety recorded a total of 76 tackles, six defensive passes, three interceptions, three recalls and one clearance in 16 games.

The Steelers are about to go into their first season without Ben Roethlisberger as their full-back. Pittsburgh must compete with defenders Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson in the division. Not just in the AFC North, but the entire conference has signal callers. So a secondary boost could be pivotal for the Steelers.

But when it comes to Tyrann Mathieu’s safety as the team’s fresh start, it doesn’t seem like that was part of Colbert’s plan. Kevin Colbert poured cold water on the rumors of Tyrann Mathieu
