UFC Vegas 55: Keteln Vieira upsets Holly Holm in the main event.

Ketlen Vieira defeated Holly Holm via split decision (47-48, 48-47, 48-47) on Saturday May 21, 2022 live from UFC APEX in Las Vegas, NV.

“Listen everyone, listen to me, I’m next,” Vieira said after the fight when asked by Daniel Cormier how exactly she felt about the UFC 277 main event between bantamweight champion Julianna Pena and Amanda Nunes, will pursue.

“I thought I won the fight, I gave her round 2 but I thought I won the fight. I didn’t feel like it was a question,” said Holm, who wasn’t sure where to go next after the loss.

The fight started with both women exchanging leg kicks. Vieira charged for the first takedown attempt, but Holm easily reversed it against the fence. The action briefly went to the ground before returning to its feet. From the clinch, Holm landed several short knees while Vieira landed short punches. Holm went for a single leg takedown but quickly gave up the attempt. Referee Jason Herzog gave the women a lot of leeway up to the fence. Vieira tripped Holm, but Holm got up easily and continued to cling.

Holm opened the second round with two leg kicks, but Vieira responded with a head kick. Vieira came forward and landed a combination but pulled back to avoid getting into another extended clinch. Holm landed a leg kick. Vieira landed an overhand right and then knocked Holm down. Holm retreated to the fence and was able to work his way back to his feet. Holm attempted a takedown, but Vieira was able to keep her balance and reach the fence. Vieira reversed the takedown attempt and applied a standing rear naked choke. It looked like Holm was going out, but managed to escape. The fight returned to the fence, with Holm controlling the clinch until the end of the round.

Vieira landed two sharp punches to open the third round. Holm responded with kicks. The fight moved against the fence again and engaged in another clinch. The clinch broke and the action returned to the center. Vieira pushed forward while Holm was happy to counter. Holm hit the fight against the fence and another clinch. Vieira landed a pair of powerful knees, but Holm controlled the positioning. Vieira broke the clinch with a big right hand and moved forward. Vieira landed another right hand that seemed to stun Holm towards the end of the round.

Holm started the fourth round aggressively with a high number of shots. Vieira landed a right counterattack that stabbed Holm. The two women continued to exchange strikes, with the damage seen on Holm’s face. Vieira continued to land her counterattack on the right. Holm landed a powerful side kick to the body that dropped Vieira, who was able to bounce back almost immediately and land another right hand. The fight moved against the fence but Vieira evaded the clinch.

Between rounds, Vieira’s corner ripped into her, telling her that she lost round four and needed to win round five if she wanted to win. Vieira opened the round with a headbutt and landed a twisting elbow. Holm landed a pair of kicks before engaging in another clinch. After the break, Holm landed three shots that were crowned by a headbutt. Holm landed a right hook, but Vieira caught her with a right uppercut. Holm tried a single leg takedown, but again Vieira managed to keep her balance and move towards the fence.

From the clinch, Holm again controlled the position. Holm overpowered Vieira and moved her back to the fence after the break. Vieira went for a takedown but stumbled allowing Holm to defend with ease. Holm switched levels and wanted her takedown but couldn’t.

Holm arrived in Las Vegas as the second-ranked UFC women’s bantamweight fighter. The former bantamweight champion returned to the Octagon after a 19-month hiatus. Holm had won three of her previous four fights, with her only loss coming to Amanda Nunes at UFC 239. In their last fight, Holm defeated Irene Aldana.

Vieira entered the Octagon fifth in the division. After starting her career 10-0, Vieira split her last four fights before fighting Holm. Vieira defeated former Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate by decision in their previous fight. After her second straight win over a former bantamweight champion, Vieira is likely to face the winner of UFC 277 between Pena and Nunes.
