It’s November, which means college football teams are playing for championships, the home of the College Soccer League and a handful of players are playing for the Heisman Trophy.
The actual range of Heisman contenders has narrowed as we enter the final month of the regular season. Michigan State rerun Kenneth Walker III is getting all the attention after a great game in a bold win over Michigan.
In our Straw Heisman poll, Walker received 34 out of 38 votes in first place, but that could be some recent bias at play. The betting market doesn’t have much affection for Walker, who comes in 4th in terms of odds.
Alabama winger Bryce Young still the most favorite bookmaker at BetMGM with odds of +190. Full-back Ole Miss Matt Corral followed by +275. Those two have been betting favorites for most of the season, and even Walker’s introductory performance wasn’t enough to overtake them.
Bryce Young, QB, Alabama
The odds: +190
Statistics: 26 TD passes, 3 interceptions, 2,453 passes, 70% complete, 2 rush TDs
Young’s overtaking numbers are excellent, and the loss at Texas A&M was hardly his fault. It’s hard to believe he’s a sophomore and freshman just starting out.
Alabama’s next three games are all at home against LSU, New Mexico State and Arkansas. None of the current ones have a chance to stand out, but the regular-season finale at Auburn and a potential SEC Championship Match against Georgia will.
While Young has the numbers and attention in Alabama, our poll shows he may need to do more to convince voters. His chances may really drop to what he can do against Auburn and Georgia.
Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss
The odds: +275
Statistics: 15 passing TDs, 2 INTs, 2,202 yards passing, 66% completion, 519 dash yards, 10 dash TDs
Corral has been playing injured for the past few weeks, and the numbers have dropped with that. Two weeks ago, Ole Miss comfortably beat LSU, but Corral threw 186 yards, his first under 200 yards in the air. He continued that by not throwing a touchdown pass for the first time this year in the loss to Auburn.
However, Corral had a total of 25 touchdowns, just three behind Young. Ole Miss still has the Texas A&M, and Mississippi State ranked teams left on the schedule, but no Michigan-Michigan State elimination game like Walker has benefited.
Corral could win if the other main contenders falter or fail to stand out, but his recent games and the lack of one in November make the odds seem like a bad value. at this moment. His odds are longer than in other sportsbooks.
CJ Stroud, QB, Ohio State
The odds: +450
Statistics: 23 TD passes, 3 INT, 2,270 passes, 67.1% completion rate
The freshman quarterback has gotten better as a year has passed with 15 touchdowns and no interceptions in his last four games. Stroud crossed for 305 yards and faced Penn State in a big game.
Like Young, he was not the reason his team lost earlier this year. Stroud crossed 484 yards ahead of Oregon. Also, like Young, Stroud has big games coming up that will serve as a foundation if he plays well. Ohio State still has Michigan, Michigan State and a possible Big Ten Championship Game left.
There may not be much buzz for Stroud at the moment, but it doesn’t have to be. If he has big games in big games, he will generate buzz and he has the overall stats to back that up.
Kenneth Walker III, RB, Michigan State
The odds: +500
Statistics: 1,194 yards of javelin, 6.8 yards per take, 14 fold TD, 1 take TD
If the season ends on Saturday, Walker will likely win the Heisman. He ran for 197 yards and 5 touchdowns against Michigan. It was Walker’s fourth game with more than 150 yards of charge. He is the star of the show in most viewed games of the college football season.
I saw Walker as a favorite in another sports book. That can be aggressive at the moment, but this 5 to 1 odds are on the other end of the spectrum as an attractive value.
Walker has the best record right now and has another big game ahead of him at Ohio State on Nov. 20. At this point, a bet on Walker is betting on Young and Stroud not going to be any better in the game. big match coming up.
Those four are the frontrunners, but there are still others with a chance. Here are the rest of the betting favorites.
