A mother and father in Mississippi are now facing a serious case for deliberately starving their young daughter, law enforcement officials say.

Kendra Makayla Beck20 and Takoda Jordan Miller23, were taken into custody after a grand jury indicted the couple on multiple felonies, including a capital murder charge each in committing the felony of child molestation for the death of a 5-month-old child in October 2021 Kairi Beck, court documents reviewed by the Law & Crime Show.

In addition to capital murder, Beck and Miller are both charged with criminal child abuse and child neglect through deprivation of necessary clothing, shelter, health care, or supervision. The latter charge stems from alleged abuse of Kairi’s older sibling, a toddler.

The accused appeared before the judge Dina Richelle Lumpkin at the Pearl River County Courthouse for their arraignment Tuesday, where they were both being held without bail pending further trial.

According to a copy of the indictment document filed in the Curt County of Mississippi’s 15th Circuit, prosecutors allege that Beck and Miller “willfully, knowingly, or recklessly deprived five-month-old Kairi Beck of the nutrition she needs to sustain life or growth.” obtain,” Biloxi ABC/CBS affiliate WLOX reported.

The allegations against the couple go back to investigations that began last fall.

Poplarville Police Department officers and emergency medical personnel responded to an 911 call about an unresponsive child at a residence on Lot 8 at Block 1200 of South McGehee Street, the 6th October 2021 Picayune article reported. The child’s parents, later identified as Beck and Miller, reportedly told 911 that the baby “would not eat.”

Upon arriving at the home, first responders reportedly found the child not breathing. EMTs reportedly transported the baby to Pearl River County Hospital and Nursing Home for treatment. Unfortunately, the child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Rescue workers also reportedly found a second toddler in the home. The 19-month-old child reportedly underwent a medical evaluation and was then removed from the care of Beck and Miller and placed in the care of Child Protective Services (CPS). The alleged abuse resulted in the toddler being “infested with lice, covered in feces, and experiencing severe diaper rash.” The Associated Press reported. Prosecutors reportedly claimed that the treatment resulted in “significant harm to the child’s physical, mental or emotional health.”

After the child’s death, both Beck and Miller were reportedly arrested and initially charged with child neglect. While Beck remained in custody at the Pearl River County Detention Center, Miller was released after posting bail, Poplarville Police Chief Danny Collier allegedly told Picayune article. On March 22, 2022, officers arrested Miller again after the grand jury returned an indictment against him and Beck on capital murder charges.

Chief Collier reportedly said so Picayune article that the coroner’s report played a crucial role in the grand jury’s decision to indict the couple in the death of their child.

“Collier said the most significant piece of evidence he felt was presented to the grand jury was that the coroner’s report established the cause of death of the child as starvation,” the report reads.

Mississippi code says that capital murder is punishable by up to life imprisonment or the death penalty.
