Looks like UFC middleweight Kelvin Gastelum needs to make some last-minute adjustments as his opponent and future prospect Nassourdine Imavov was stopped upon entering UFC273 fight week. Gastelum, a former interim middleweight title challenger and possibly the current UFC Middleweight Champion’s toughest fight Israel Adesanya in the past, is 1-5 in his last 6 fights and definitely needs a winning streak to not be further from a title shot.

Imavov is 11-3 in his entire MMA career and trains at the French MMA factory, the training home of the former interim heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane and the former training center of the current undisputed champion Franz Ngannou. Imavov is 3-1 in the UFC and has a total of 9 wins to finish. That fight against Gastelum would have been the biggest of Imavov’s career with just his 5th UFC appearance, but it seems fate doesn’t want it for now.

Gastelum will now be battling another rising prospect, this time from a very different continent to Imavov. Dricus du Plessisan aspiring fighter from South Africa who was set to fight Anthony Hernandez at UFC 273will now most likely take Imavov’s position to fight Gastelum while other arrangements are made for Hernandez.

Du Plessis is 16-2 with a 100% completion rate his entire MMA career, so this fight seems more threatening on paper for Gastelum than the Imavov fight. Du Plessis is 2-0 in the UFC with back-to-back KO wins. But Du Plessis is more dangerous when it comes to getting more submission wins than knockout wins. All of Du Plessis’ submission wins come either by guillotine or rear naked choke.

What do you think of Gastelum’s last-minute switch from Imavov to Du Plessis? Who do you think will win this middleweight fight? Do you think Gastelum is past his best or do you think his experience advantage gives him a good chance of beating Du Plessis? UFC 273 takes place early next month with the UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkaowski defended his title for the third time against a uniquely styled fighter in Chan Sung Jung in the main event.
