DURHAM – Duke 1st year student Trevor Keels was named ACC Freshman Player of the Week after helping lead the No 2 Blues to three home wins in five days.
Keels averaged 14.7 on-target shots of 0.522 (16/29) in three wins as Duke ended the non-conference schedule with a 10-1 record. On Tuesday night against South Carolina State, the freshman scored 14 points with three rebounds and three assists in 21 minutes. He followed with 11 points in the 4/8 shoot, including a pair of three-pointers, while also creating five assists and adding three more in a win over Appalachian Bang on Thursday.
Keels ended the week by taking 8th out of 13 points from the ring with a game-high 19 with three steals and no revenue when the Blues pulled out of Elon on Saturday afternoon. It marks his most points since opening the season with 25 games against Kentucky on Nov.
Clinton, Md., Hometown is Duke’s third top scorer with 12.6 points per game, while his 22 steals lead the team and place fourth in the ACC. Keels’ +2.5 assists/rotation ratio is also fourth in the league, and he is the only Blue Devils to have three goals in each game this season.
Keels was a Duke’s fourth week ACC freshman selected for six weeks this season. Classmate Paolo Banchero won the honor twice (November 15, November 29) while AJ Griffin was accredited on Nov. 22. Over the past eight seasons, Duke has earned the ACC Freshman of the Week in 68 of the possible 142 weeks. 21 different Blue Devils have won this award at least once during that time.
Duke opens the ACC’s game on Wednesday night when it welcomes Virginia Tech to Cameron Indoor Stadium for a 9 p.m. tip. The game will air on ESPN2.
