KCON LA: Eight more acts for K-pop convention

KCON organizers have unveiled a second installment of talent joining the 10th anniversary edition of celebrating K-pop and other aspects of South Korean popular culture.

Other acts announced Wednesday include Ateez, INI, JO1, Kep1er, Lightsum, Loona, NCT Dream and TO1. They join previously announced stars Cravity, Enhyphen, Itzy, Nmixx, Stayc, the Boyz and WJSN.

The three-day event, now dubbed KCON 2022 LA Presented by Toyota, is supported by CJ ENM, the Korean entertainment conglomerate behind films like Parasite, Decision to Leave and Broker. CJ ENM recently bolstered its already impressive television production credentials by acquiring a controlling interest in Endeavor Content’s scripted entertainment division.

Ateez is an 8-piece boy band. Kep1er is a 9-member girl group formerly known as Girls Planet 999 who rose to fame from a talent show that aired on CJ ENM’s Mnet channel. NCT Dream is the third spinoff sub-unit of SM Entertainment’s boy band NCT. JO1 is an 11-piece Japanese boy band that emerged from CJ ENM’s TV show “Produce 101” and is co-managed by Japanese musicians Yoshimoto Kogyo and CJ ENM.

The gathering will be held August 19-21 at the Crypto.com Arena and Los Angeles Convention Center. The event is the first in-person KCON gathering since 2019. KCON was first held in Los Angeles in 2012 for approximately 10,000 fans. KCON has since grown to include events in Europe, Asia and more, as well as global live stream events. The last in-person KCON in Los Angeles attracted nearly 300,000 attendees.

During the pandemic, the event went virtual with “KCON:TACT,” which has attracted more than 22 million K-pop fans over the past two years. The 2022 convention will continue some of these elements and function as a hybrid combining in-person and digital components.

“The celebration will also include digital programming to ensure fans around the world can join in the celebrations,” said KCON organizers in announcing the talent lineup.
