Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano broke the glass ceiling for women’s boxing

The great boxing battle between female champion Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano is said to have set a record. Here’s what we know.

On paper, the April 30 boxing match between champion Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano is the most important match in women Boxing History. The early numbers prove its worth and could be a game changer for women’s boxing.

Taylor (20-0, 6KOs) is the undisputed lightweight world champion. Hailing from Ireland, Taylor had fought in New York’s Madison Square Garden twice before, but she fought her third fight with Serrano.

Serrano (42-1-1, 30 KOs) is the current WBC, WBO and IBO featherweight champion. She is gaining weight to challenge Taylor but has won the title of being super light. Serrano is one of the most highly regarded champions ever, having won nine world titles in seven different weight classes.

Serrano also has an impressive 68% KO rating and is from Brooklyn, NY. She has a homecoming advantage over Taylor, which helps to accelerate this fight. She also has the support of Jake Paul.

Boxer turned YouTuber currently working on boxing promotions. Paul signed Serrano for his Most Valuable Advertising program, and his first project as a promoter looks like it’s going to be a huge hit.

Can Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano sell out Madison Square Garden with Jake Paul’s help?

Combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani tweeted on February 4 that MSG sources told him Taylor and Serrano were one of their most successful pre-fights ever.

“The Katie Taylor x Amanda Serrano pre-sale is the second-highest grossing in boxing history at Madison Square Garden, according to an MSG source,” read Helwani’s tweet.

It’s no surprise that Taylor and Serrano are selling so well when both fighters are prolific, but the fact that selling at such high rates bodes well for the growing stature of women’s boxing.

Traditionally, women’s boxing has lagged behind women’s MMA in popularity and pay. Taylor and Serrano could change that. It also helps that Paul’s media force is behind Serrano. He is proving himself valuable as a promoter.

Paul and Serrano made friends in the boxing gym. While talk to FanSidedPaul affirmed his belief in Serrano’s boxing abilities.

“There’s no denying it, and Amanda Serrano is going to be a household name,” Paul of Serrano’s future told FanSided. “And I said it from day one, she would be on billboards everywhere. And you know, that’s what she deserves. So it’s great to be a part of it.”

Madison Square Garden has a capacity of 20,789. If Taylor and Serrano can sell off MSG, both prove to be box office gold. Winners could be the next big thing in combat sports, and Paul could see his advertising business rapidly expand.
