Katie Taylor feels Amanda Serrano’s showdown looks ‘likely’ in 2022

Unified lightweight champion Katie Taylor is insisting that the final showdown with Amanda Serrano will take place in 2022.

Both female stars have duel scheduled for next month – in the hopes that both sides will win and then clash next year.

Taylor will face mandatory lightweight challenger Firuza Sharipova in Liverpool next month, while Serrano will face Taylor’s ex Miriam Gutierrez.

The Olympic gold medalist believes the fight must begin next year or else it will be a huge blow to the sport.

“I think if it doesn’t happen next year, it’s going to be very disappointing for sport in general,” Taylor told RTE.

“I’d be surprised if it doesn’t happen next year, with all the talk that’s happened in the last few months. Even her fighting one of my past rivals in the next match, also, will be the perfect match, build up for our fight, it’s certainly very, very likely but we both have to beat our opponents in a couple of weeks coming. Once we do that, we can seriously talk about us. Right now it looks likely.”

Taylor warns that she won’t ignore her upcoming rival Sharipova,

“I can never be complacent,” Taylor said. “I know that well. I’ve never had a hard time focusing on these battles, even when there’s so much noise around the other fights, I’m completely focused on the fight ahead and when the battle is going. This is over, we can start talking about the big deal. fighting.”
