Kanye West took to Instagram on Tuesday to challenge a Billboard report that he’s been quietly shopping his catalog of songs, writing of Stories, “Same as Taylor Swift…my publisher is being put up for sale without my knowledge.”
Billboard reported Monday that members of the rapper’s team “selectively met with potential buyers to see what kind of valuation his song catalog could fetch,” and estimates they’re targeting $175 million. In another Instagram story, West posted a screenshot of a text message with an unnamed person, in which West asked, “Can you ask Gee who sells my releases?” likely referring to his manager, Gee Roberson.
“Fake news,” the person replies. “Of course every publisher wants to pitch there [sic] hardest to buy. Sm.”
Sony and West representatives did not immediately respond diversity‘s request for comment.
Although West compares himself to Swift, the two situations are quite different since Swift’s publisher’s catalog was never for sale. Instead, in 2019 manager Scooter Braun had acquired her former Big Machine label and all of the music recorded on it, which included Swift’s masters.
