In November 2013, KanyeWest freaked out on reporters Wave Galloway during an on-air interview. While ranting about his influence and financial woes, Sway Ye suggested he run his clothing brand Yeezy “on his own” instead of seeking support from big companies. The multiple Grammy winner responded in the viral clip, ‘How Sway? You don’t have answers, man.”
Now, nearly a decade later, the Yeezy CEO revealed in an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America that Sway “actually” had the answers.
Grinning, he said, “You know what? I’ll go ahead and say that Sway had the answer. I know people will say, ‘No!’ “
Of course, social media users had a lot to say about how West addressed the viral moment and admitted he was wrong. One person tweeted, “@RealSway had the answer the entire time but @kanyewest just needed to learn the ins/outs, find the right team, grow as a person/artist/entrepreneur etc.. just Life University.” But in the end everything works together for him. Get to it!“
A second person agreed that Sway or Ye had the knowledgeable “answers back then” to produce an independent clothing line. Dozens more agreed “after the fact” that Sway was right, while others called him “stubborn” for not looking at the bigger picture.
One person wrote: “Sway said you should ‘take a step back and publish it yourself’ rather than trying to get these big brands to sell your product. He had the answer, Kanye just didn’t want to do it that way, he wanted to be recognized and accepted by the fashion industry. You were persistent.”
Another said: “Both Ye and Sway were right back then. Ye, in turn, was right about having a certain structure and learning the business as a whole. Sway is right 2 days in hindsight because now that Ye has the knowledge and infrastructure you can empower yourself instead of through companies.”
“If he humbly admits that Sway was right, that means Sway should be in some kind of Hall of Fame.”
A handful requested that the “Donda” artist sit down with Sway again to offer a humble apology. One said: “Nah, he must say it with the same energy as he did 10 years ago! The fact of the matter is he has to come by Sway and do another interview.”
West is currently at war with Adidas over its Yeezy brand after a decade of collaboration. He has verbally attacked executives on social media, accusing Adidas of blatantly copying its popular Yeezy design. In June, the 45-year-old pointed out the similarities between his Yeezy slides and Adidas Adilette 22 slides and called out the Adidas CEO Kasper Roersted.
“These shoes represent the disrespect that people in power have towards talent,” Ye wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post. “This shoe is a fake Yeezy made by Adidas themselves. I don’t talk to DC about it either. Kasper, talk to me. Nice Monday.”
