Kakao Entertainment, part of Korean tech group Kakao, confirmed Monday that it will produce a movie version of “Solo Leveling,” a hit web toon.
The picture is co-produced on his behalf by Japan’s A-1 Pictures (“Sword Art Online”, “The Seven Deadly Sins”, “Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, Erased” and “Your Lie in April”) Nakashige Shunsuke. The music is said to be composed by Sawano Hiroyuki (“Attack on Titan”). Some media called it a series but in email to diversity Kakao Entertainment described the adaptation as a “movie” and as a “movie”.
The property was originally a web novel written by Chugong in 2016 before being developed as a web series written by h-goon with art by Redice Studio CEO Dubu and D&C Webtoon and published by Kakao Page in 2018.
The action-fantasy novel follows the adventures of main character Sung Jinwoo in a world constantly threatened by monsters and the forces of evil. In his battles against these forces, readers watch as Sung – dubbed mankind’s weakest hunter – transforms into one of the world’s strongest hunters.
The online series has garnered over 14.2 billion total views worldwide, with particular success in Japan, Thailand and the United States. She is known not only for the storyline but also for the spectacular art that brings the storyline to life.
“Solo Leveling” was also released as NFTs. A role-playing game is currently being developed by Netmarble.
Kakao Entertainment reports that around 220,000 fans petitioned for a feature film adaptation via the change.org website. The film version is scheduled for delivery in 2023. Kakao hasn’t disclosed all distribution channels, although it has been reported that Crunchyroll will release the film online outside of Asia.
“If someone told me this web novel would become an animation [film] When I started writing it six years ago, I wouldn’t have believed them,” Chugong said in a comment provided. “I’m really excited about this and can’t wait to bring Sung Jinwoo and his friends to life.”
“It seems like just yesterday when we first talked about the possibility of this customization. Words cannot express how moved I am for this to happen,” said illustrator Dubu.
Kakao Entertainment was formed in 2021 from the merger of Kakao Page and Kakao M.
