Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson is already looking for a new contract. The wide receiver market has skyrocketed.
Big deals awarded to the likes of Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams and Stefon Diggs have completely reset the wide receiver market, with an emphasis on guaranteed money. Until Justin Jefferson gets paid – be it by Vikings or elsewhere – he has a shot at being the highest-paid player in his position.
Jefferson knows that, which is why he’s saying all the right things in preparation for these negotiations.
“[I’m]excited for them and excited for what I have in store,” Jefferson said of The Athletic. “Just knowing some of the players that have been signed and just knowing that I can still have some great years here with this team, so I’ve definitely looked into that and kept that in mind.”
Vikings: Justin Jefferson is looking forward to getting paid
Beginner deals are affordable, and there’s a reason for that. The Vikings have been able to build a broad reception corps around Jefferson and Adam Thielen for years, but at some point the former will get his market value contract.
And for Jefferson, that means completely resetting the market as it currently has no reasonable value.
“I have so many goals in store,” Jefferson said. “I’m over the rookie year, I’m over the sophomore year, now it’s into the third year. At this point, a target is on my back. I plan to go further up. They will always have players in the league who will try to stop me and what we are up to.”
Provided he can come up with the kind of numbers the Vikings think he’s capable of, they’ll happily back the Brinks truck for him. The LSU product has 196 catches for 3,016 yards and 17 touchdowns over the past two seasons.
