Crew members who were on the set of FX’s “Justified: City Primeval” have spoken out after production in Chicago was halted when two cars engaged in gunfire smashed through the show’s barricades.
A crew member who wished to remain anonymous was returning from a toilet break when they heard a bang in the distance. “I’m originally from a military town, so I know what gunshot sounds like,” they said. As the noise grew louder, they said, “Our first AD got on the walkie and said to everyone, ‘Come down, take off your safety vests, there’s gunfire.'”
Just before the firefight, the production was preparing to film a chase on the street. “I worked with the first team and the cast to make sure we were ready to go,” said the crew member.
According to the member, Chicago police closed both ends of the street from midnight to 4 a.m. during the shooting. The incident happened around 1 a.m
The crew member said: “They drove right past our U-Crane camera arm and our crane operators were probably the closest while these guys were shooting at each other. The underground crane had to drive and turn left to get away from them.”
The crew member also described how an officer who was across the street near a bus stop “steered out of the way just in time because a bullet hit the glass of the bus stop and shattered the glass.”
Another crew member, who also wished to remain anonymous, initially heard bangs coming over the park and suspected it was fireworks. “They started moving in the corridor of the park and I heard them getting closer and closer,” they said. “They came right down the street toward 130 people. I saw the cars fly past the cops and blow through on the road we prepared for filming.”
The person added, “The underground crane was on the road at the time and they drove right past it.”
No one was injured in Wednesday night’s incident. Crew members speak diversity said the main streets where filming was taking place were barricaded at both ends, but cars broke through them.
This is the second gun violence incident affecting major production this week. Early Tuesday morning, a crew member for NBC’s Law & Order: Organized Crime was killed while reserving parking spots for the production.
