Juliana Velasquez vs. Liz Carmouche preview and prediction

At Bellator 278, Juliana Velasquez meets Liz Carmouche.

Liz Carmouche came to Bellator to become a champion, and her good friend Ilima-Lei Macfarlane once stood in her way in that goal. MacFarlane was the Bellator women’s flyweight champion and although both women said they would fight each other if they had to, in the end that didn’t have to happen. MacFarlane lost her title to Juliana Velasquez and now the road is open again for Carmouche to finally become world champion in MMA. Can it happen at Bellator 278? That’s what we’re here for.

Carmouche is perhaps the greatest fighter in WMMA history not to have held a world title at one company. She’s gone toe-to-toe with the best, winning Valentina Shevchenko and Jessica Andrade, and now she has a major showdown with undefeated Bellator in Velasquez.

Velasquez did everything that was asked of her for her. She defeated two former Bellator champions on her way to Carmouche, deposed MacFarlane to win the title, and then defeated former Bellator Kickboxing Champion Denise Kielholtz to defend the title in a thrilling match.

So who will win the upcoming Main Event and walk away as the champion at Bellator 278?

Bellator 278: Juliana Velasquez vs. Liz Carmouche Prediction

This is a break in style from Bellator 278, with Velasquez taking a far more technical approach to hitting, using lots of front kicks to smack her opponent’s back before unlocking a combo to rack up the points. Carmouche is much more aggressive and will likely try to get in and hit with her, but isn’t always the most active out of the clinch.

If the fight goes to the ground, Carmouche will most likely have the advantage. She is slightly taller than Velasquez and has a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, giving her a slight advantage over judoka Velasquez.

Velasquez has the size of most of her opponents and was able to use this to keep MacFarlane at bay. She was also able to use her length to negate any of MacFarlane’s takedown attempts, and with MacFarlane and Carmouche coming from the same gym, Velasquez will have a pretty good idea of what to expect.

Again, it’s worth pointing out that Carmouche is a much more powerful fighter than MacFarlane and Velasquez must respond accordingly.

While Carmouche is a tough nut to crack for any fighter, she’s gotten caught up in bad game plans before, and against a rock-solid fighter like Velasquez, that could be a problem. If she can’t get them to the mat and crush them with ground and pound or a steady stream of submission attempts, it’s fair to say that Velasquez has the technique required to best Carmouche to a decision win.

Winner: Juliana Velaszquez by unanimous decision.
