John Sterling completely fooled Giancarlo Stanton’s long flyball [Video]

New York Yankees broadcaster John Sterling was fooled again by a Giancarlo Stanton flyball and called away…then caught.

Since 1989, John Sterling has been the iconic voice evoking the Yankees’ most memorable moments. In all that time he’s seen thousands of home runs. He’s also seen his share of home runs that weren’t.

The longtime broadcaster added to its error list on Wednesday when it declared Giancarlo Stanton’s deep fly ball into left field a home run.

Spoilers: it wasn’t.

“The ball is up. It is far! It’s gone…but trapped,” Sterling said, his initial excitement giving way to the most disappointing reality check.

It’s also not like Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Raimel Tapia did anything spectacular to hit the home run. It was a routine catch on the warning lane.

The Yankees likely shared Sterling’s dismay as they could have capitalized on that home run. Anthony Rizzo, Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torress all hit home runs for New York, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit three all by himself for the Blue Jays.

Stanton scored at the bottom of the eight, with the Yankees trailing 6-4. If that ball had gone a little further, it would have leveled the game 6-6.

A win for the Yankees was clearly not meant to be. While Sterling wished he could turn the result into a home run, he couldn’t, and the final score stayed 6-4.

Sterling has done so once before in his storied career as an announcer. During the Yankees’ wild card game against the Red Sox, he mistakenly called a very similar Stanton hit a homer. To Sterling’s credit, that particular hit bounced off the wall, causing understandable confusion.

Announcement errors happen. Sterling won’t get every call right, but after 50 years of calling games, it might be time to wait to celebrate home runs until they’re confirmed. John Sterling completely fooled Giancarlo Stanton’s long flyball [Video]
