John Means’ elbow injury is worrying; Orioles have no net due to lack of veteran commitments – The Athletic

The Orioles didn’t get the worst news on Friday afternoon. But it certainly wasn’t encouraging.

Ace left John Means was placed on the 10-day IL with a left elbow strain. Means had an MRI which confirmed the strain and will now undergo further tests on the elbow over the next day or two to determine the severity.

When a forearm strain – which caused Means to leave the game after just four innings on Wednesday – becomes an elbow strain and further testing looms, one can’t help but worry that elbow ligament damage will be discovered. And that, of course, could lead to the dreaded Tommy John surgery.

At the moment that jumps ahead.

“We’re having some additional tests done to look at structural damage to his elbow. So let’s just keep looking at that for now. It’s uncertain for how long,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “I spoke to (Means) earlier. He’s fine. John isn’t really an up and down guy. I think he’s just trying to stay positive and upbeat about this whole thing. But I think he’s handling it quite well.”

So it’s a waiting game. And a hopeful game that will see Means, who turns 29 this month and has never had an elbow problem, avoid needing end-of-season surgery after two starts in 2022.

However, regardless of how long he’s out, it’s a big problem for the Orioles. One that goes beyond, taking its place every fifth day.

It’s really about who absorbs those innings that Hyde bet on from Means. And what happens to the inexperienced bullpen when he has to pitch those extra innings.
