John Daly congratulates Cameron Smith, chalking up another British Open win for the mullet
Australia’s Cameron Smith caused the ultimate excitement over Open Championship favorite Rory McIlroy, claiming victory with an impressive hot streak down the back nine to seal the win at 20 under par.
The world congratulated the uniquely styled golfer, but John Dally’s tweet was spot on.
Cam Smith started Sunday four shots ahead, shared by crowd favorite Rory McIlroy and Norway’s Viktor Hovland. Although we were one of the few who called possible upset victory, the fairytale ending seemed to be McIlroy, with the crowd from St Andrews (and seemingly everyone else) cheering him on at every hole. Nobody seemed to take Cam Smith seriously as a threat.
But when the Aussie golfer hit the back nine – with Hovland faltering from nervousness and McIlroy playing too safe – it became the Cams’ (Cameron Smith and American Cameron Young) attack that started the tour’s uproar by taking them the four-time Major winner McIlroy jumped in breathtaking fashion.
Five straight birdies (and six total) during a tense back nine put the Irish golfer on defense, with 33-year-old McIlroy missing a necessary eagle on the penultimate hole, resulting in Smith becoming the first Australian since Greg Norman The to win Open.

Cam Smith showed all the conviction in the world on the final day. What else could one expect from someone confident enough to sport a very distinctive hairstyle (and an equally idiosyncratic stache) that’s almost more talked about than his golfing talents? Not missing a shot, another extravagantly coiffed golfer, two-time Major winner John Dally, gave a very cheeky congratulations.
You have to know one.
This, of course, inspired a series of hilarious tweets, because why not? That being said, if you’ve just reached the Claret Jug, chances are nothing will bother you.
With some joking that Rory McIlroy will have to do the look next time.
During the press conference, he was asked by a journalist if he planned to give up his “good luck” mullet, to which he responded with overwhelming response no. Why get rid of what clearly works brilliantly? Also, have you seen how Cam Smith looks without the mustache? Around the age of 12.
The Open winner also joked that he “will find out how many beers fit in there [the Claret Jug]. That’s for sure,” during the presser.
He definitely deserves it, both for his golf game and for his looks.
