Joel Embiid Opens Up About What It Was Like ‘Chasing Around’ Ben Simmons

Joel Embiid shared that while he wishes the best for Ben Simmons’ future, sending Simmons around and asking him to stay in Philadelphia was “difficult”.

Back in October, Joel Embiid made headlines when he said he no longer care about the plight of Ben Simmons.

“At this point, I don’t care about that man,” Embiid said. Little does the NBA world know that Embiid knows what the world is doing now: Simmons will never play for the 76ers again, and nothing will change his mind.

There was talk that Embiid take Simmons on Twitter right before he was traded, but in an interview with Malika Andrews, Embiid opened up about his complicated emotions on the Simmons story.

Embiid admits that he and Simmons last spoke about a week before the trade deadline, but Embiid wants nothing more than the best in regards to his former teammate.

“I think he’s a great player, and I think whatever he’s going to add to Brooklyn will take him to another level,” said Embiid.

While Embiid happily wished Simmons in Brooklyn, the MVP candidate revealed how difficult it was to pursue Simmons and begged him to stay in Philadelphia. In the end, he removed himself from the situation.

“I chased him a lot trying to get him back and trying to make him feel comfortable again. It is so difficult. I didn’t care anymore.”

What Embiid chatted with Andrews revealed that Simmons’ situation isn’t just complicated for Simmons and the 76ers: it’s something that affects the dressing room and hurts his teammates.

“If I’m proud, I’m straight, and if I’m honest, I can say a lot of things, but I still do what I think is good as a teammate,” said Embiid.

Distractions in the dressing room can have a profound effect on the psyche of an entire team, which is why Embiid has to push whatever Simmons wants to do out of his mind as the season begins. Overall, Embiid has taken the right approach in controlling only what he can: Simmons is currently happy elsewhere, the 76ers are 35-23, and Embiid is currently NBA MVP chat leader.
