Last month his daughter Elly-May confirmed her father is recovering well following his urgent procedure.
“My dad is out of surgery and awake,” she said in December.
“The doctors are very happy… Thanks for all the get well wishes.”
Speaking to Sunrise in early December, Barnes explained that the surgery was the result of “back problems for about eight years” and that all his performances had “finally caught up with him”.
“[The surgeon]said, ‘Your back is really short and so is your hip and we need to fix them because they affect each other.’
“I said ‘I’m procrastinating, I’m procrastinating’. But for the last two months I have actually been in excruciating pain.”
Barnes said, laughing, “And you know I’ve done a lot of shows but people don’t know that because I scream so much anyway.”
The 66-year-old said at the time he wasn’t sure how long he would be out.
“Probably at least four months, but I’ll probably only take six months off,” he said.
Barnes said he got back to performing with the minimal recovery time from his most recent surgery – and this led him back to the hospital.
“When I had open-heart surgery, they told me, ‘After eight weeks you’ll be fine, but you have to rest for 12 (weeks),'” he recalled.
“After eight weeks I did a show – and was back in the hospital.
“I’m one of those people who won’t sit still and take the advice of others – so I’ll try (this time).”
The heart surgery Barnes was referring to was an operation in 2007 to replace a malfunctioning aortic valve, a problem he had had since birth.
“That’s my plan to try and do the right thing and hopefully when I come back I’ll be ready,” he said.
Barnes said he hopes to write a book and songs for a rock ‘n’ roll album during his six-month hiatus.
