Escape from the NBA center Lorenzen WrightThe wife’s ex-cousin says he didn’t pull the trigger in the star’s actual murder, but he testified on Friday that Wright’s ex-wife recruited him and was the alleged killer . Billy Ray Turner for an original attempt on the basketball player’s life.
“We’re not talking about professional assassins here, are we?” ask the prosecutor Paul Hagerman.
“No sir,” witness Jimmie MartinWright’s ex-wife’s cousin and an unrelated co-conspirator in the case, responded on the stand.
Prosecutors say Lorenzen’s ex-wife Sherra Wright recruited her cousin Martin and her lover Turner to plan and execute the murders. Martin testified that he did not appear before the actual murder on July 19, 2010 in Tennessee, and Sherra asked him to come to the scene afterward to help clean up the evidence. He claims that he fears for his life throughout the plot and both he and Turner agree that Sherra is “crazy”.
But Martin, who is serving a sentence for an unrelated murder, said he and Turner were involved in an early attempt against Lorenzen. Martin says Sherra told them she left a window open at Lorenzen’s Atlanta apartment. According to Martin, the men, armed with guns, drove up, and they found a window leading into a game room with a pool table, PlayStation, lounge, chairs and TV.
There was no one in the room. Martin testified that they tried to be quiet and pulled out their guns when they entered. They entered the living room to find someone sleeping on the couch. Martin said he couldn’t tell who the person was, but it wasn’t Lorenzen because he was so much younger. They got very close to the sleeping person but left the person unharmed and out of the apartment.
Sherra Wright is serving a 30-year sentence after pleading guilty facilitate the commission of murder and facilitate the attempt to commit first-degree murder. Martin is not much better, sentenced to 20 years for murdering his girlfriend Martha Jean Bownes. Jurors acquitted him in 2009 of first-degree murder, but stuck with a lesser charge of second-degree murder. Martin was out of bounds in the Lorenzen Wright murder, but was ultimately convicted of second-degree murder in 2012. That’s when he first presented investigators with his role. himself in Wright’s death. But Turner’s defense attorney John Keith Perry said in opening statements that Martin was serving himself as he faced a sentence for killing Bownes.
He called his indirect accomplice the real killer, calling him “the kind of person who changes facts like a drawer-changer.”

In Martin’s testimony, Sherra said she told Lorenzen she was going to meet someone for the money. She lured her ex-husband out. That’s when she and Turner chase Lorenzen, who runs and jumps over the fence like a “deer”. He said that according to Sherra, both she and Turner were fired.
Hagerman states in the prologue that Sherra Wright did not attack Lorenzen, and left her gun in the bushes out of fear and excitement.
