Jerry Rice picks a side in the debate between Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo

Jerry Rice has taken sides in the debate between Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance over who should be the future quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.

When it comes to who should start for the under middle San Francisco 49ersJerry Rice thinks man should be Trey Lance over Jimmy Garoppolo.

Rice might just want a slushy or scratch card at his local supermarket, but when KSBW shoved a camera and microphone in his face, the 49ers’ legendary wide receiver answered the call okay. 2022 will be Lance’s second NFL Season from North Dakota State, while Garoppolo may have already been traded had he not undergone off-season shoulder surgery.

“Trey Lance, I think he’s ready to go,” Rice told KSBW. “I think he’s incredible because he has that one aspect that Jimmy has [Garoppolo] didn’t, and that’s the threat of running with the ball and stuff like that. His agility, his strong arm. This guy is ahead of his time. He’s a young kid but he’s very experienced and I think he’s ready to go.”

Is Rice right with his logic or is he a good soldier by embracing the inevitable with the 49ers?

San Francisco 49ers: Jerry Rice picks Trey Lance over Jimmy Garoppolo

Looks. From the perspective of a goodwill ambassador, this is the right call for Rice. The 49ers will be rolling with Lance this season as they look to trade Garoppolo sooner rather than later. San Francisco gave up a big draft capital to move up to No. 3 and evict Lance from the state of North Dakota in 2021 NFL draft. They also picked him over Justin Field and Mac Jones…

Regarding Rice’s claim that Lance has a stronger arm and more posability than Garoppolo, he’s absolutely correct. Again, that’s why the 49ers seem to have given up farm to get him. As for Rice’s other claims of being “very experienced” and “ready,” let’s stick a needle in the balloon and pop that bad boy real quick, shall we? That’s why leaving Garoppolo is so risky.

Though they were both excellent FCS quarterbacks, Garoppolo had far more college and professional experience than Lance. He played in eastern Illinois for years before supporting Tom Brady in New England, and that was all before he joined San Francisco midseason in 2017. Lance has essentially a year of FCS college football under his belt at this point.

Given that Kyle Shanahan’s offense is so incredibly complex, who says Lance is best equipped to lead this thing in his second pro season? Sure, Shanahan will shrink the playbook to bring Lance with him, but the 49ers could be a key regression candidate team this fall based on a quarterback change. It might work out in the long run, but he could also be Jordan Love.

Ultimately, the 49ers drafted Lance so high they believed he could be the next Josh Allen or Carson Wentz. Newsflash, there is no next Josh Allen. As for the Wentz comparisons, yes they share the same alma mater, but Wentz runs through teams as the late Larry King has done with wives for the past three years. If he bombs in Washington, Wentz’s NFL career as we know it could be over.

While it serves Rice to firmly believe in Lance, he hasn’t proven anything on a professional level. Jerry Rice picks a side in the debate between Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo
