Jeremy Renner: Marvel Star ‘Completely Crushed’ by Tractor While Trying to Rescue His Nephew

Jeremy Renner was trying to keep his snow removal tractor from sliding and hitting his nephew when he was pulled under the vehicle and crushed on New Year’s Day, an incident report from the Nevada Sheriff’s Office confirms.

The Avengers actor, who turned 52 in hospital, broke more than 30 bones in his body after using the snow removal tractor to pull his adult nephew’s truck out of the snow.

The parking brake was not engaged and would have stopped the snow cat vehicle, which is traveling on a track, when it began to slide sideways, according to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office redacted report filed Friday.

“The snow groomer skidded, causing Renner to exit the vehicle without applying the emergency brake,” according to the report filed Friday and obtained by CNN.

“Although the PistenBully had some mechanical issues, based on our mechanical inspection it is believed that the parking brake would prevent the PistenBully from moving forward.

“When Renner tried to stop or divert the PistenBully so as not to injure (his nephew), he was pulled off the track under the vehicle and rolled over.”

The brake warning light in the snow groomer’s cabin was not working, and “mechanical problems may have been a factor in this accident,” the report also said.

After the incident, the nephew assisted Renner until medical help arrived at the scene.

Renner was flown to the hospital, where he stayed for more than two weeks, underwent at least two surgeries and was treated in intensive care, the report said.

Disability was not believed to be a factor in the incident, the report also concludes.

The incident began on New Year’s Day when Renner was towing his nephew’s truck off the driveway after it got stuck in the snow, he told investigators on Jan. 5 while he was hospitalized, according to the incident report.

After the truck was towed onto the road, the snowplow “started sliding sideways,” then “it started rolling down the hill,” Renner said.

At this point, Renner jumped out of the snow groomer, he told investigators.

“As he got off the PistenBully, he realized he was headed straight for (his nephew).

“He was afraid that the PistenBully would hit (his nephew), so he decided to try to stop or distract the PistenBully.”

In order to get into the cab of the snowplow, Renner had to climb onto the movable track and was “immediately pulled under the left siding,” according to the report.

A 911 log call obtained by CNN said Renner was “completely crushed under a large snow groomer (vehicle)” and was having “extreme (difficulty) breathing.”

It also said: “The right side of his chest has collapsed – upper body is crushed.”

“The PistenBully rolled over him and drove down the street,” the report said. “He lay on the ground concentrating on his breathing while (his nephew and others) provided assistance until medical personnel arrived on the scene.”

“These 30+ Broken Bones Will Heal”

Renner, who plays superhero archer Hawkeye in the Marvel film and TV universe, fractured more than 30 bones in the incident, he said.

The actor is expected to require further surgeries to treat his injuries and faces a long road to recovery.

He posted a photo to Instagram last week with a caption that read: “Morning practice, resolutions have all changed on this special New Year’s…. Emerged from tragedy for my entire family and quickly focused on uniting actionable love ❤️

“I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I…. Lots of love and appreciation to you all.

“Those 30+ broken bones will heal and grow stronger, as will love and bonds with family and friends. Love and blessings to you all.”

A friend of Renner’s recently told Radar Online that the Marvel actor’s injuries were “worse than anyone knows.”

But in a hopeful sign, Renner confirmed late last week that he was out of hospital and continuing his recovery at home.

In response to a tweet from his TV show’s official account, The Mayor of Kingstown, he wrote, “Out of my brain fog in recovery, I was very excited to watch episode 201 with my family at home.”

His recent update prompted a surge of love and support, including from some high-profile celebrity friends.

“You’re a champion, mate! We love you,” Australian actor and Marvel co-star Chris Hemsworth wrote.

“All our aloha,” added Jason Momoa.

Heidi Klum wrote, “Sending you love,” while actress Eiza Gonzalez added, “You got that J.”

“Pray for you,” added singer Gwen Stefani.

Avengers co-star Chris Evans added, “That’s a tough mf’er. Has anyone ever checked the snowcat??? Sending so much love.”

Renner jokingly wrote back, “Love you bro…I was checking on the snowcat, it needs fuel.”
