Jeremiah Green Cause of Death: Modest Mouse drummer dies aged 45, days after the band announced recent cancer diagnosis

Jeremiah Green, founding drummer of rock band Modest Mouse, has died just days after the band announced the band’s cancer diagnosis.

He was 45.

“It is with a very heavy heart that the Green and Namatame families announce the passing of their husband, father, son and brother Jeremiah Green,” his mother, Carol Namatame, posted on Facebook.

“Jeremiah, drummer and founding member of Issaquah-based band Modest Mouse, lost his brave battle with cancer on December 31st. He passed away peacefully,” the post reads.

Modest Mouse announced Green’s death in an Instagram post on Saturday.

“Today we lost our dear friend Jeremiah. He went to rest and just faded away,” read a statement released on the band’s social media accounts on Saturday.

“Please appreciate all the love you give, receive, have given and will receive. Jeremiah was all about love.”

Green was barely a teenager when he joined the newly formed Modest Mouse, which included singer/guitarist Isaac Brock and bassist Eric Judy, among others.

Modest Mouse was originally based in Issaquah, a Seattle suburb, and later relocated to Portland.

Its name goes back to a passage by Virginia Woolf, who once described the common man as “modest, mouse-colored people”.

Influenced by Talking Heads and XTC, among others, Modest Mouse debuted the 1996 album This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About and garnered a sizeable critical fan base before launching their fourth release Good News for People Who Love Mainstream hits included Bad News and the singles Float On and Ocean Breathes Salty.

Green had a breakdown around the time of Good News for People Who Love Bad News, which was released in 2004, and briefly left the band.

He’s been back for more recent albums including Strangers to Ourselves and The Golden Casket which came out in 2021.

Last week, the band’s frontman, Isaac Brock, announced that Green had recently been diagnosed with cancer, but didn’t specify what type of cancer it was.

Radio DJ Marco Collins tweeted last week that Green had pulled out of a tour because he has stage IV cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy.
