Jennifer Kupcho claims her first Chevron Championship title

The 24-year-old is the first American to win the event since 2015.
Kupcho’s victory celebrations began when, traditionally, she jumped into Poppie’s Pond, accompanied by her husband and her caddy, and cheered by the crowd. The tradition was started by Amy Alcott in 1983 and has been followed by all winners ever since.
“It’s surreal,” Kupcho said, according to ESPN. “Being a big winner is very special, and being the last person here in Mission Hills to jump into Poppie’s Pond is all really special.”
Next year, the tournament will be moved to Houston from Mission Hills Country Club as part of a deal with current sponsor Chevron.
“Just can [win] so quickly after my wedding and to be able to celebrate with my husband and have him here, it’s really special,” Kupcho continued. “I didn’t see him coming over the bridge. He picked me up. I don’t think he ever picked me up, so that was pretty cool.”
Before Sunday, Kupcho’s most notable win as an amateur came when she won the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur in 2019.
Despite her relative inexperience, it was a near-complete performance from the 53rd-placed player, who had taken an early lead with Minjee Lee after the opening round.
Kupcho stayed at the top of the rankings all weekend, going into the final round six strokes ahead after posting a tournament record 16-200 with 8-64 in the third round.
First, Kupcho built on that advantage in the final round, scoring birdies on the fourth and fifth holes before playing the final 13 holes in 4-overs to card a 2-over-74 final and the tournament 14-under to end.
