Jeff Passan’s comment should spook Red Sox fans

ESPN’s Jeff Passan has compared Rafael Devers’ situation to Mookie Betts, and that’s terrible news for Red Sox fans everywhere.

There has been much talk of the Boston Red Sox failing to secure a contract extension for the star’s third baseman, Rafael Devers, before the start of the 2022 season. Devers is a real stallion in this league and he wants a big payday.

But is he asking too much? According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Boston has offered Devers a new $200 million contract. Devers wants something in the $300 million range.

Rafael Devers and Boston are not close in contract negotiations

This update should affect the entire Boston nation. To make matters worse, Passan compares their negotiations to Mookie Betts. Everyone knows what happened there as Betts is now with the Los Angeles Dodgers ready to try and help the NL West powerhouse return to the World Series.

Meanwhile, Devers got off to a hot start to the campaign for Boston, hitting .381 with a homer and four RBI. Devers is also known for his fantastic glove as his defensive skills are second to none.

Boston dropped the ball here by not making a new deal for him, but fans definitely understand now that they know Devers wants so much money. The same thing happened with the Yankees as it was reported that Aaron Judge wanted around $360 million.

Unless Devers lowers his asking price, it doesn’t look like he and Boston will get on the same page anytime soon. It’s going to be a tough pill for people across town, but the Red Sox aren’t going to make a big decision either.
