Jeff Nelson doubles after a terrible call by throwing Charlie Montoyo

Jeff Nelson blew another call behind the plate, throwing Toronto Blue Jays skipper Charlie Montoyo over it.

In a late ball game between the Oakland Athletics and the Toronto Blue Jays, home plate umpire Jeff Nelson botched a call and threw Blue Jays skipper Charlie Montoyo in a power-hungry double-down of epic proportions.

On a full count, Athletics right-hander Dany Jimenez’s offer was a good four to five inches off the plate. It could have fooled most batsmen, but Lourdes Gurriel Jr. didn’t bite the breaking ball. Too bad Nelson thought it must have painted the tiniest edges of the corner of the plate so he could punch Gurriel out. Montoyo offered Nelson some criticism, so he was thrown.

Oakland would win the game if Cristian Pache’s big fly over two runs in the top of the ninth.

While some folks are at this point banging their fists through the table to bring robot umpires into the game of baseball, how about some responsibility for the zebras and the blues of the world first? Players, managers, and front-office executives can get the ax if they’re mediocre to deplorable at their job. But for some reason referees are like team owners and can do anything.

Although the world could use a little less automation and a few fewer cyborgs, baseball can’t allow umpires to miss calls that much, especially when they can’t be challenged. Being able to challenge certain plays is a big boost for baseball. While umpires are just plain disgusted when they have to address the home crowd when a team decides to challenge, just look in the mirror, gang.

Is getting apoplectic over a poorly managed 162 game a bit much? Maybe a little, but remember Toronto has serious postseason ambitions this year. What if the Jays finished third in that game or, God forbid, fourth in the tight AL East? One game could prove to be the difference between Toronto chasing a third World Series title and the Jays missing the AL postseason.

It was an absolute feat for Nelson to throw Montoyo after making his big mistake GOB Bluth.
