“Jeanie Buss has been doing this for a long time … her father taught her well.” Skip Bayless buries any claims that the Lakers sacrificed future picks to get rid of Russell Westbrook

After the dreadful 2022 NBA season, many expected a quick fix in and around the Los Angeles Lakers, starting with Russell Westbrook. They initially replaced the head coach but then there were all the rumors and no big name to change their fortunes. After hiring new coach Darvin Ham this offseason, hopes are high that Los Angeles can get back on track and make a playoff push. The organization continues to actively seek to improve the roster, but a lack of trading resources and Jeanie Buss’ unwillingness to sacrifice a future selection have made this difficult.

The one big name the Lakers have shown significant interest in is Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving. It has been reported that the team is unwilling to trade their future draft picks. On “Skip and Shannon: Undisputed,” analyst Skip Bayless said it’s clear that Jeanie Buss isn’t willing to pawn the team’s future on the present.

The 70-year-old analyst explains the state of the Lakers, “She’s not going to give up draft picks that are five and seven years old. Her point is, “I’ve been doing this for a long time. My father taught me well. I cannot give you my future for your present.”

There has been a lot of speculation and rumor surrounding the Lakers this offseason. One of the biggest names floating around in rumors was veteran security guard Russell Westbrook. In reality, he’s the only major trading chip available to the Lakers as they don’t want to part with their 2020 championship pairing of LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

After Westbrook was acquired via a trade with the Washington Wizards last offseason, he looked like a completely different player. The former MVP and scoring leader fought on both ends. He averaged 18.5 points per season, his lowest performance since his rookie years. Therefore, it was expected by the fans that the franchise will replace him with a stronger alternative.

Nets’ Irving was a better option, while Rockets’ John Wall was also available in the market for the exact position. Lakers chose 2016 champion Kyrie purely because of his history with franchise megastar LeBron James. But the Nets asked to include some future picks in the deal, which the Lakers declined.

The problem with this is that the 17-time NBA champions Lakers have already postponed a number of future picks. Any future capital would most likely be after superstars like LeBron James left the team. That means betting on the team’s uncertain immediate future could be a risky proposition for Jeanie Buss and the Lakers organization.

For now, it looks like Westbrook and the Lakers will be bringing it back for another season. If the team is healthy, it can do very well in the postseason. Meanwhile, Jeanie hopes to land another future megastar like Kobe Bryant or Magic Johnson, who led her to 10 NBA titles in the Buss era.
