WASHINGTON (AP) – Jayson Tatum scored 51 points – 48 of them in the first three quarters – and the Boston Celtics won 116-87 over the Washington Wizards on Sunday.
Tatum made nine 3-pointers and shot 18 out of 28 from the field. He had 31 points before half-time and hit 50 on the field of goal when the game was around 4:30. He added a 3:55 technical foul to play and then left the game while the Washington crowd, including many Boston fans in blue, spent him a warm welcome.
Bradley Beal scored 19 points for the Wizards, who have never coached Wes Unseld Jr. back after being on the COVID-19 health and safety protocol list. Washington, with one home game remaining eight games, has lost three games in a row.
Boston took a 46-45 lead in the second half, but then Tatum’s 17th striker started the game 14-0 to close the first half. Tatum added a few free throws and two 3-pointers in that span and finished with 18 points in the inning.
He hit 40 points with a few free throws, leaving 4:48 in the third inning. Soon after, a dunk sent him to a season-high of 42, which he set last month against Milwaukee. He scored two more thirds before the round ended, the second taking Boston to 89-62.
Tatum seemed to realize his day might soon be over, snapping three more shots in the final minute of the round. They all missed, and he finished the third set with 50 points.
But he came back with 7:21 remaining in the fourth inning and scored enough points to surpass the 50 – although he is still shy of his career high of 60, set with San Antonio last April.
Celtics: Jaylen Brown scored 18 points with 10 rebounds. Tatum also had 10 rebounds.
Wizards: Assistant Pat Delany coached the Wizards a game in Unseld’s absence before he also joined health and safety protocols. Then, Joseph Blair coached the next three games. … Deni Avdija scored 13 points with seven rebounds.
Celtics: Hosts Sacramento on Tuesday night.
Wizards: Host the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night.
