Jayson Tatum told those wanting to part ways with Tatum and Celtics teammate shooting Jaylen Brown: “I think we’re both still a long way from our prime.”
But the story is a bit more complicated than that, as Tatum and Brown are passing to their teammates during the game: their teammates fail to land their shots.
Months later and the deadline after the trade, Brown and Tatum are still in Boston together, while some blame both for the Celtics’ 34-26 record. For all those who believe the two should part, Tatum has a special message on why “the grass isn’t always greener” on the other side.
“We had a lot of talk,” Tatum replied with a smile. “I think it’s really picked up this year, especially at the start of the season, and we were asking each other, like, ‘Do you want to be here?’ And we’re both like, “That’s right.”
“[Brown] like, “Dude, I don’t get it,” Tatum continued. “If you think about it, we’ve had a lot more success together this year and what we didn’t achieve last year. JB attended three Conference Finals; I’ve been to two. I think both of us are still far from our peak. And I think what people don’t understand is, if you want to break up with us, the grass isn’t always greener. There aren’t many people in the NBA like JB. Or, if you want to get rid of me, not to make fun of me, but I think I’m one of the best players. I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t want to have two of the best players under 25 on your team. Yes, there is a certain amount of difficulty over the course of a season, but we have won more games together than we have lost. “
Jayson Tatum expressed his wish to see his partnership with Jaylen Brown fall apart
Before All-Star Weekend began in Cleveland, Tatum was a key part of a bold 135-87 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. Tatum scored 28 points in their February 15 game, while Brown scored 29 points overnight.
It was their biggest margin of victory in a 457-game tie against the 76ers — and Brown was pleased with his and Tatum’s performance.
“We’ll take it,” Brown said. “We finished the job tonight. It feels good.”
