New Japanese Pro Wrestling star Jay White appeared on Chris Van Vliet’s “INSIGHT” podcast this week.
White tells the story of how winning a free ticket to WrestleMania 27 led to his wanting to be a wrestler:
“I think it’s just being young and having faith in myself. I actually won a radio contest about paid tickets and flights to WrestleMania. I won that when I was 18. I just finished studying. It was WrestleMania 27 in Atlanta and that brought me back to wrestling. I thought if I was lucky enough to win this, why not become a wrestler? Since then, I felt like that so I did everything I felt was necessary, but never had a blueprint, that’s not a guarantee. As for me, I think I know, and I was right to leave New Zealand. There is no struggle.”
White said of how he won the ticket:
“After graduating from college, I went straight to the New Zealand Army. I practiced first, but I left before I finished, so I didn’t know what I was doing. I got a job for a friend’s father who had a construction company. I heard on the radio that there was a contest and the winner was going to WrestleMania, all paid. I had to call up, and you had to argue with someone else. They will only tell you if you are for or against it, and on the spot, you must win the argument. The theme they gave us was ‘chick-flks movies are the best thing in the world.’ They say I’m for it and the other is against it. I managed to talk about how there is a voucher on the back of the receipt for Video Easy (video store) and you can get chick-movie 2 eat 1. They appreciate the possibility of a sale. mine and I’m the winner. They debated several times a day for two weeks, people would draw lots. At 8am a couple of weeks later my phone started calling and I answered and won. It was crazy.”
When signing with New Japan:
“I met Finn Balor for about a year on the job. I started in January 2013 and we brought him in to do some of our shows in February 2014. I think the way he said it, because he didn’t see me struggling much. like that, what impressed him was that I did all the other work. I was building a ring with a broken thumb, I had a cast, and Finn knew I wanted it. So he talked to the New Japan system, mentioned me, talked to the right people, and I landed in Japan on January 1, 2015.”
