Jason Lee opens up on how he and his fans are still not over the ‘devastating’ cancellation of MY NAME IS EARL – GeekTyrant

Jason Lee has had a solid career, starting in Kevin Smith films mall rats, Hunt for Amy and dogmathen appear in classics like Almost famous and the animated hit The Incredibles. He went on to star in a few sequels, and the whole thing Alvin and the Chipmunks film franchise, but arguably his most popular work was his four-season series my name is earl.

The show followed Earl Hickey (Lee), a regular Joe who cut some corners in life and made some not-so-great decisions in the past. He wins $100,000 with a scratcher and jumps for joy when he gets hit by a car and begins to reconsider his life. He hears about the philosophy of karma in his hospital room and decides to devote his life to righting the wrongs of his past. He was included in the cast of Ethan Supleewho played his brother Randy, and Jaime Pressleywho also played his ex Joy Nadine Velazquez, Eddie Steeples, Louis T Moyle, Trey Carlisle, Dale Dickeyand Gregg Binkley.

The show ran from 2005 to 2009 and its unplanned ending infuriated fans so much that Lee said, “Probably not 4 days goes by without someone texting me on Instagram like, ‘Dude, what happened to Earl?’ Or some people think it’s my fault, like, ‘Dude, you left us stranded, what the hell?’ I’m not NBC, man. I didn’t cancel the show. It was out of my hands.”

In a recent interview on The Nine Club, which you can watch below, Lee said, “It was really devastating,” adding, “Greg Garcia, the creator of the show… what he’s done with this show is incredible. He showed up on set one day and said, ‘Hey, I’ve got bad news guys, looks like we’re getting cancelled.’ Like ‘clean out your lockers’ and we’re out of here.”

It was really a shame to see that the show preceded its well-deserved breakup. Series creator Greg Garcia nodded to Earl in an episode of his next series, Rising Hope, shows a clip on the local news and reveals that Earl has finally completed his list. But when the host teased “… and you’ll never guess how it ended,” the TV was turned off.

Maybe in this day and age of reboots, we could actually get another season my name is earl. I never say never at this point. Until then, I’ll think of the show every time I call someone a fool or quote guest star Christian Slater saying, “Earl, I see your pickle,” which happens to be a frequent occurrence here.
