Jamie Kah is looking to return to racing in Group 1 Winx Stakes at Randwick on Saturday

Star jockey Jamie Kah will make her long-awaited return to racing aboard Zaaki at the Group 1 Winx Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

It caps a remarkable return to the saddle after suffering head injuries in a horrific crash at Flemington in March.

Kah was in an induced coma for five days after the fall. She also had multiple fractures on her body, including a broken wrist, a broken foot, and a broken nose.

When she came to, she had significant problems of memory loss and confusion.

But after a lengthy hiatus, she passed neurological tests two months ago, paving the way for her return.

She was recently embroiled in a ‘white powder’ scandal in which she was accused by Racing Victoria of conduct ‘detrimental to the image, interests, integrity or welfare of racing’.

Kah has ridden Zaaki in seven of his starts, including his wins at the 2022 All-Star Mile and Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes.

After a gratifying attempt at Rosehill in the 900m last Friday with Kah on board, trainer Annabel Neasham has decided that Zaaki is ready to return to race day this weekend, rather than two weeks away from starting at the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400 m) waiting for the now eight-year-old to have started his spring campaigns for the last two years.

“He came back as good as ever,” Neasham told RSN.

“I don’t know if I dare say it, but I don’t think he’s ever been better.

“He flies and his test on Friday was really good.

“After that, Jamie felt like he was ready to go.”

Zaaki’s winter campaign was cut short after an unplaced performance in the Doomben Cup (2000m) Group 1 in May and followed a third straight win in the Hollindale Stakes (1800m) Group 2 a month earlier.

“He had a gallop at the races a couple of weeks ago and was a bit difficult but then he’s usually at his best,” added Neasham.

“We’d be crazy not to watch the Winx Stakes on Saturday.”

The Chris Waller-trained fangirl is the $3.50 favorite for the first Group 1 race of the season, while Zaaki is on the second betting line at $4.50.
