James McArthurThe Phillies’ entry to the 40-man roster begins with the work he did at home in Colorado during the 2020 minor league hiatus.
The 25-year-old right-back added strength and mobility to his 6-foot-7 frame by working with the folks at Push Performance, and he’s “cleaned up” some of the mechanical issues. in the bottom half under the guidance of Phillies pitching strategist Pat Robles.
McArthur returns in 2021 to show off a fast mid-’90s ball that hit 97 mph at one point. Not bad for a self-proclaimed “late bloomer” from Mississippi as a 2018 12th-rounder throwing “into the low 90s, even the 80s in college”.
“Velocity is a gradual escalation,” says McArthur. “The closure is huge for me.”
McArthur pitches at the High-A Jersey Shore and Double-A Reading in 2021. He has an ERA of 4.25 in 78.1 innings, overtaking 83 and walking 24. In his last five starts, he’s has six runs earned while passing 26 and walks six out of 24 innings.
That shot made defending him from the Rule 5 draft an easy decision.
“We face a huge risk of losing him,” said general manager Phillies Sam Fuld speak. “We feel like he can help us win the big tournaments next year.
“He has a good four-way fast ball and brings his velocity deep into games. He complemented it very well with a nice curve, and he succeeded with his change. It’s an interesting package. We think three solid pitches will allow him to be an effective starter for us. “
At the urging of Double-A pitching coach Brad Bergeson, McArthur begins using his extra throws at the back in greater numbers in 2021.
“Doing that more, trying to get them off my fast ball, I think that made a huge difference,” the pitcher said.
He mentioned a few friends, who are left-handed Bailey Falter by Phillies and righty Bailey Ober of the Twins, as inspiration. Both were added to the team’s 40-man roster a year ago and are spending considerable time in the professional leagues in 2021.
