Jacob deGrom leaves with bladder problem as Mets’ offense, bullpen fight

ATLANTA — Jacob deGrom glanced down at his right middle finger as he explained at the Mets clubhouse Friday night how a blood blister prevented him from throwing lower in the opening game of the season’s most important series. It wasn’t why he allowed three runs in six innings during the Mets’ 5-2 loss to the Braves, he said. And he’s not concerned, he added, that the problem has persisted long enough to prevent him from making his next start.

The problem for New York is that any malfunction involving deGrom is troubling. Especially now. The Mets are already dealing with a lot. They are experimenting on their lead contender, Francisco Alvarez, after getting him out of the minors to solve their left-handed problems. They audition unannounced, untested, or unproven helpers at large sites to see which ones they can continue to trust—or, in some cases, begin to trust. This is while the Braves are battling for a division title just before the postseason. Now the game’s best shooter has to do with a bubble? It might turn out to be nothing, as deGrom seemed to suggest, but it limited deGrom on Friday, and it’s a bad time for more developments like this. The Mets would rather make it smooth than worrying. Friday was anything but.

The Mets and Braves are once again in first place in the NL East with five games left, including two more against each other. At regular break, deGrom’s next start would fall on Wednesday, the final game of the season. The game can be important.
