Jacob Blake Sr. was hospitalized after being violently arrested during a protest for Jayland Walker

The father of Jacob Blake, the black man who was shot seven times in the back by a Kenosha, Wisconsin police officer in 2020, was briefly hospitalized last week after attending a protest in Ohio and falling out with local police officers, who tried to arrest him.

On Wednesday, July 6, Jacob Blake Sr. was taken to a hospital after officers tried to take him and other protesters in downtown Akron at the site of a protest against the killing of Jayland Walker by Akron police last month to arrest. Blake and other activists from a group called Families United had traveled to Ohio from their respective states – Blake lives in North Carolina – to join protests sparked this week by the recent release of police bodycam video showing how Walker was shot down by a volley of fire from eight Akron officers at the end of a chase.

NBC reports that Blake Sr.’s brother Justin Blake said Blake Sr. and other members of Families United were sitting in a van when a man was punched and kicked by police at the Walker demonstration. Justin Blake says the group went to the scene to appeal the man’s treatment, which led to Blake Sr. clashing with police and what appeared to be a seizure.

He was rushed to that emergency department with was admitted as a patient. He has since been released and over the weekend spoke at a rally in Akron about the encounter and its message of police accountability.

“They put me into a fit,” reads a video posted to Twitter that Blake Sr. told the assembled crowd on Saturday. “I don’t know what happened then. The next time I woke up I was more determined than ever,” Blake continued

Although he was not arrested, the Akron Police Department issued an arrest warrant for the man. Court documents charge Blake Sr., a man activated since his son was shot two years ago, with four counts including rioting, resisting arrest, failure to disperse and disorderly conduct.

On August 23, 2020, Blake Sr.’s son, Jacob Blake Jr., was shot seven times by Kenosha Police Officer Rusten Sheskey as officers struggled to arrest Blake, leaving him paralyzed. Like so many other shootings involving police, this event sparked days of protests and civil unrest after footage of the incident went viral.

Blake Sr.’s brother told Madison.com that he found the allegations ridiculous. “They were there to unite the community and family and seek justice before they were attacked.”

“He did not resist arrest,” he continued. “He leaned against the fence for a breather. He is disabled.”

A video of the ordeal that caught the attention of Blake Sr. and other activists Wednesday was captured by Bianca Austin, an aunt of Breonna Taylor. Austin and Blake Sr. are both part of Families United.

The clip shows a black man, later identified as justice organizer Michael Harris, being thrown against a wall and a car and dragged to the ground as cops try to arrest him. An officer punches Harris in the face while his colleagues swarm around Harris and hold him down.

A picture Harris’ broken lip and head surfaced on social media.

The video also shows an officer grabbing Blake Sr.’s arm and being arrested.

Viewers can see Blake Sr., an oversized man, is out of breath and appears to be having trouble breathing while being held before being thrown onto Austin’s car.

Justin Blake explained: “They made a statement and used all these people as examples. They show they are a brutal police force.”

On Wednesday, after Blake Sr. was taken to the hospital, it was Austin arrested from the APD.

The three arrested, including Minnesota activist Cortez Rice, were taken into custody at the Summit County Jail.

Activist social media user Jolly Good Ginger reports Austin and Rice’s bonds were $2,500 each, while Harris’ bond was $5,000.

The Ginger also secured legal representation for the lot through the Ohio National Lawyers Guild, a group that deals with social justice and justice cases.
