Australian World No. 1 Ash Barty stunned the tennis world by announcing she was retiring from the sport. She took to social media to announce her decision in an interview with friend Casey Dellacqua. Even more shockingly, Barty is only 25 years old and is currently in her prime. After winning the Australian Open just a few months ago, Barty was just one US Open title away from ending her career slam.

As expected, the tennis world was completely stunned by Barty’s decision. Her contemporaries paid tribute to Barty’s career and praised her for her individuality. 2020 French Open winner Iga Swiatek also took to social media to congratulate Barty on her incredible career.

She said it was all still surreal to her and thanked Barty for giving so much to tennis. She praised the Australian’s competitive spirit and wished her all the best for the next chapter in her life.

“It’s still a bit surreal to me… Ash Barty, thank you for what you’ve done for our sport, for every time we’ve trained together and played against each other – it’s always been a challenge in the best possible way. I hope you enjoy every second of this new chapter, Champ.” She said.

Iga Swiatek will be the new world number 1?

In her press conference, Barty said her name will be removed from the WTA rankings after the Miami Open. That leaves the world No. 1 up for grabs. World No. 2 Iga Swiatek is the main contender for the new World No. 1. The Pole only needs to win one match at the Miami Open to become No. 1.

Other notable names in the #1 competition include Paula Badosa, Anett Kontaveit, Maria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka. With the clay court season looming, expect a close No. 1 battle between Swiatek and Badosa.
